TWD: Chocolate Chunkers

So, you had to know that with all the chocolate going in to this recipe that I was going to be a happy girl. Claudia of Fool for Food selected Chocolate Chunkers from everyone’s favorite baking book for this week’s Tuesdays with Dorie offering. Thank you Claudia!

These cookies were interesting to make because, aside from there being soooooo much chocolate going on, there is very little flour going on – the consistency of the dough seemed like more of a really, really thick brownie batter to me (and tasted awesome too!) I’m sure that it will come as no surprise to those of you who have been here before that I did not add any dried fruit of any kind. If I was going to commit so much of my good chocolate hoard to this recipe (and it did take what – about a pound of dark chocolate and almost a half pound of my good white chocolate) then I wasn’t risking hating these cookies by adding something I know I don’t usually like to it.


What I did add, or actually just change, was the type of nuts I added to these cookies – I used chopped macadamia nuts which ended up being a really good idea. I think I would actually really like it with pecans too, but I had just the right amount of macadamias on hand. I couldn’t help thinking that this was a pretty expensive recipe to make though since, as mentioned before, it took a hefty chunk out of my baking stash of chocolate and nuts.

That got me thinking about ingredients and how I decide what recipes I’m going to make or not -a lot of the time depending on what it will cost me to make it. What ingredients do you hoard? For me it is mainly the chocolate and nuts, but also my good vanilla and cocoa. Come on people – fess up – don’t make me think it is just me!

So, after all that, were they worth it? Honestly – for me, they were just good (I think I’m starting to become slighty jaded from all the excellent baked goods every week) but a few of the folks I shared them with had the following to say:

Blue Dragons Coach: “These are the best cookies I have ever had in my life.”

Friend Who Is A Caterer: “Oh wow! These are amazing! Oh wow!”

So, I pretty much took that to mean that they liked them! For me, even though they were really good, I don’t know when or if I would commit so much of my ingredients to them again.

Oh my, they look like wet dough drops– just the way I like 😉 Totally delicious! I think I hoard… Flour. Sugar. Some chocolate. But that’s it 🙂

i agree….dried fruit, with all this amazing chocolate?! no way. but changing to macadamia nuts, that’s inspired. your cookies look great!

These cookies were delicious! I’m glad it made a big batch. As for ingredients I hoard…I won’t use good chocolate on ordinary cookies. I’ll use the bag of chipits instead. Macadamias are another. On the flip side, I have some hard margarine in the fridge that I need to get rid of, but I haven’t found a baking project that I want to use it with. Real butter always wins over the hard margarine.

I hoard chocolate, nuts, vanilla, saffron, and a variety of flours. And your cookies turned out great – they are my favorite Dorie cookies to date!

Mmmm macadamia nuts. Good nutty choice. Let me see. I hoard lots of stuff: vanilla beans, cupcake liners, sprinkles, white chocolate chips, cake mix etc etc. Trust. You aren’t alone. LOL

Yours do look pretty yummy. I’m all about hoarding ingredients. Those babies can be expensive. Which is why, after reading the recipe, I only made a few of these. 🙂

hee hee i had to scale back the chocolate and did not do the melted mix in…i wanted a paler cookie this week! as for hoarding, the appropriate question would be, what DON’T i hoard?? you should see our pantry…my hub says we could live out of it for a month at least.

Ooo – macadamia nuts would be wonderful. And here’s my confession – I hoard nuts, vanilla beans, and my whole nutmegs. I hate it when I have to haul any of them out for a recipe because I’m scared it won’t turn out well and I will have wasted them.

Rocky mountain, is that where you’re from? Looks terrific and I love the macadamia nuts. If we didn’t do the malt thing last week, I think these would have been my family fave. It’s still delicious. Oh, I hoard chocolate and nuts. Nuts are in freezer.

These look great! I love all the chocolate. I’m kind of like you in that I don’t like to use expensive ingredients for ordinary desserts. I tend to hold on to good chocolate for special occasions!

Oh, I used macadamia nuts also, and they were really good. And I’m totally with you. Great tasting cookies, but if I’m going to use great chocolate I’ll make World Peace cookies. Or Quintuple Chocolate Brownies.

I skipped the fruit to suit my husband’s taste, and after tasting them, I am glad it is just chocolate and nuts. I loved these cookies! They beat the whoppers from last week. It just keeps getting better and better. These were difficult to make look good in a photo and you did a stunning job with your pictures.

No fruit in mine either, but I bet I would have loved those macadamia nuts. They look fabulous. What do I hoard???? Nuts. Definitely nuts.

Your cookies look wonderful! I’m with on hoarding chocolate and nuts (but I do buy flour and sugar in those huge bags at Costco, so I guess I hoard all things baking!)

these were super expensive!! sorry they didn’t live up to the hype for you… but they look delicious 🙂 macadamias sound perfect. i really loved them, but i doubt i will be making them again anytime soon!

Beautiful photos…and your cookies look wonderful. I agree on the amount of ingredients…my oh my I didn’t think I would ever see so much chocolate in one place. Definitely not at my place! LOL!

So are we agreed? I will eat all the fruit cookies and you can eat all the chocolate ones? Okay, good, it’s settled then.

i was cheap and used chocolate chips instead of high quality chocolate…though my white choc chips were ghiradelli, does that count for anything? 🙂

unlike you, i love dried fruit w/chocolate though 🙂

I mostly hoard my wonderful sour cherries from Trader Joes and also some honey that we brought back from a monastery in Scotland. That stuff gets doled out like it’s gold.
