Organize Much?

by Holly on March 11, 2012

If you could only do one thing that helps organize your life each day, what would it be?

As you can tell from Kayla’s sweet kissy face, I can be easily distracted by some pretty important people. I already confessed my abject detest of cleaning, so it probably follows that at any given time I would choose to play games and do Kayla’s therapy stuff than deal with organizing.

The catch 22 of course is that I’d have more time for both if I was more organized. I’ve really been working on improving in this area, but always seem to feel like I’m just barely getting on top of things and any one little catch destroys the whole game plan.

This isn’t what I intended to write about today, but honestly I just can’t help myself! Organization is not my strong suit when it comes to my home or kitchen even. I’m still learning (always!!) and trying to figure out a good system and frankly, when most days feel like they are spent just trying to keep my head above water, I just don’t get as far as doing more than putting out the fires and rolling with the punches.

The irony of course is that when I do get my act together and have a plan in place, it usually makes a big difference and helps things be more organized and everything flows better… until something throws things, which happens more often than not.

A big part of this has been getting out of my own way and not being so focused on feeling overwhelmed that I overwhelm myself more and quit before even trying.

So, my question for you is this: do you plan your menus? Do you do it weekly, write it down, use an app? What tips can you share? Links, sources?

It is usually just me and my two little boys who are rather picky. One thing I have found that helps is to have them plan with me. I’ve tried freezer meals too, but more for me than the boys since they rarely want to cooperate and eat what I’m eating. They will try lots of different things, but they like to get stuck in their own little ruts with what they are in the mood for.

So, pretty please! Drop some wisdom off in the comments would you? I looked at my schedule for this week thinking it couldn’t be as nuts as last week, only to discover it looks to be just as bad or worse!

So. What is your most favorite, secret weapon tip for taming the chaos that is motherhood? Or, if like me, you are just stumped a lot of the time, please feel free to commiserate and share your thoughts.

Here’s hoping we all have a fantastic, chaos-minimized week!

(possibly one of my few tips – I keep a supply of homemade granola for breakfast. My boys eat it as parfaits or cereal almost every single day and even as a snack – updated recipe coming tomorrow!)

I am looking forward to that recipe!
For christmas I told hubs all I wanted was a large paper planner! He kept telling me I just needed some kind of electronic calendar, but those just don’t work for me. I need paper to write on, cross out, and carry around the house with me. So he got me one, and as a family, we have NEVER been as organized as we are now. Hubs tells me has something going on, it goes in my planner. I tell hubs what I have going on, and he tried to remember, lol, but with how organized I’ve become it’s been easier for him as well. I plan our weeks menu every monday, and then grocery shop on tuesday for the week. I also plan out a week’s worth of blog posts in it each week.
I have no idea what to do for picky eaters. I just feed my kids what we have, and if they don’t eat, they don’t eat. They’re allowed water after dinner but nothing else. Slowly they’ve started eating more, and we’ve found that our 5 year old actually likes Pork (but no other meat).
to help with mail organizing, I only pick up our mail at a time I know I can go through it, and toss the junk, file the important stuff, and pay whatever bills may have come.

Well, I _used_ to play my meals by the month and go grocery shopping once a week. Putting in some meals that were quick and easy and some that were more Sunday dinner allowed me to move things around during the week when unexpected things came up. Lately??? I’m doing good when I plan the week out. Money has been super tight since I haven’t subbed but three times while my 10 yo has been so sick (2 months+). I am totally focused on him and haven’t kept up with other things well.
I did manage to plan this week out and it feels soooo much better. I use both an on-line calendar (, creating a ‘menu’ calendar in with my others, not using the separate menu tab which didn’t work for me ’cause I need to see activities to plan the menu) and a dry erase board in the kitchen (copy weekly menus/activities from the calendar) since the computer is downstairs. iCal on the mac works well, too, but there’s not as much room to write.

Life is so much better if I make a least a simple menu plan and make sure I have all the ingredients to make a few meals. The other thing that always brings success is doing something for dinner after breakfast. Clean veggies foe a salad, make a fruit salad, prepare and cook meat etc. Dinner is always easier if some small part is done early in the day.
Good luck! When we have a less than perfect dinner experience I know that I have a new day tomorrow!
Hang in there!

oh! forgot to mention Works really well for some people. Her basically philosophy is you can do anything in 15 minutes a day if you put your mind to it.

You know I have some serious OCD tendancies here but I am UBER planned or I think my head would exploded! I meal plan and grocery shop only wait for it…once a month! I hate shopping for food and can’t think of a worse way to spend money. I have started ad matching and I’m a long time coupon user. You are welcome to come by anytime and I’ll show you my crazy method. As for organizing, every part of my house has a place for everything…except my desk. Which is total chaos at all times 🙂
